Angaza Design: Pay-As-You-Go Pricing for Solar
Angaza provides a low-cost, scalable implementation of pay-as-you-go (PAYG) pricing for solar power in Tanzania. Angaza customers take home a PAYG-enabled solar device for a nominal upfront fee, then prepay for energy by using mobile money to send micro-payments to Angaza on a flexible schedule. With DIV funding, Angaza tested sales of the lamp and improved the design of marketing and user education materials.

Through a licensing model, Angaza's Pay-As-You-Go platform redefines how off-grid energy products are purchased, financed, and monitored in emerging markets. This presents an opportunity for over one billion people to purchase solar products for less than they currently spend on inferior energy options like burning kerosene.
For manufacturers, Angaza has multiple options to embed Pay-As-You-Go technology into their products, based on their distribution channels, target markets and product price point.
- Cable-based technology – the lowest cost option; well suited for small scale, portable Pay-As-You-Go products.
- Keypad technology – uses direct SMS communication with customers; removes the need for a sales agent network (for markets with mobile money solutions).
- GSM technology – relies on cellular networks to transmit data between the product and Angaza’s platform, the Energy Hub.
For distributors, the Angaza Energy Hub is a customizable, web interface that manages all aspects of a Pay-As-You-Go distribution network and supports the Pay-As-You-Go devices produced by our manufacturing partners. Distributors also have access to the Angaza Activator, a smart-phone app that facilitates distribution operations in the field.
